Betty’s Husband For President ’76

October 25, 2011

When Richard Nixon resigned as U.S. President in 1974, in the wake of the Watergate scandal, vice-president Gerry Ford became president. He had become vice-president the same way after Spiro Agnew had resigned. Ford became the only President of the United States who was never elected President nor Vice-President by the Electoral College.

An explanation of the button pictured above: First Lady Betty Ford was popular in some circles (and unpopular in others) due to her moderate and liberal stances on a number of issues such as feminism, equal pay, the ERA, sex, drugs, abortion, and gun control. She is credited with raising awareness about addiction when she publicly shared the story of her own battle with alcoholism. She later went on to found the Betty Ford Center.
