In 1968 Eldridge Cleaver was a leading member of the Black Panther Party. He ran for President on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket but received only 0.05% of the popular vote.
Later that year he fled to Cuba and then Algeria when he was charged with attempted murder following a shootout with Oakland police.
